The park is absolutely beautiful.
Wide open meadows, mature live oaks, scenic marsh views, walking trails, nature-inspired playgrounds, and thoughtfully designed gathering spaces make it feel peaceful while still offering plenty for children to enjoy.
The brand-new Paddock Pavilion is especially stunning and was practically made for family celebrations. It offers a covered gathering space just steps from the playground, giving adults a comfortable place to visit while little ones play nearby.
For families who want a relaxed, elevated outdoor celebration that feels distinctly Lowcountry, this is one venue I would absolutely recommend touring.
James Island County Park
It’s hard to make a list like this without including James Island County Park.
For decades, it’s been one of Charleston’s favorite places for family gatherings, birthday parties, reunions, and community events.
One of the biggest advantages is the variety of reservable shelters scattered throughout the park. Depending on the size of your guest list, you can choose a more intimate picnic shelter or a larger pavilion with plenty of room for extended family.

The shaded pavilion, large playground, open green spaces, and marsh views make it an ideal location for smaller first birthday parties where children have room to run while adults gather comfortably nearby.
The giant live oaks also provide something every Charleston parent appreciates during warmer months—plenty of natural shade.

Carr-Richardson Park | West Ashley
Carr-Richardson Park is one of West Ashley’s hidden gems.

If Pinterest has completely taken over your planning (no judgment—I get it!), renting a blank-slate event venue gives you the freedom to create exactly the celebration you’ve been envisioning.
Charleston has no shortage of charming venues where you can bring in your own caterer, baker, balloon stylist, florist, and décor.

- Private Homes (Airbnb, VRBO, local rental companies, etc) – Many of these homes have a blanket “no parties” statement but what they’re actually trying to avoid are big parties or weddings where people are drinking which would open them up to potential property damage or liability claims etc. If you reach out directly to rental companies or hosts, they will often grant permission for things like baby showers or 1st birthday parties (neither of which are typically ragers!) 😅

After photographing hundreds of first birthdays over the years, I’ve noticed that the celebrations families enjoy the most usually have one thing in common:
They don’t try to cram everything into one day!
Instead, they spread the excitement over a few weeks, giving themselves the chance to truly enjoy each milestone instead of feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
If I were planning a first birthday today, here’s exactly how I’d do it.
Four to Six Weeks Before
Choose your birthday party venue and theme!
Whether you’re reserving a pavilion at one of Charleston County’s beautiful parks, booking a private dining room downtown, or planning a celebration in your own backyard, securing your venue early gives everyone plenty of time to save the date.
If you’re planning a themed celebration, this is also a great time to order decorations, balloons, personalized signage, party favors, and your baby’s birthday outfits!
Two to Three Weeks Before
Schedule your baby’s first birthday portrait session and cake smash.
This timing is ideal because your photographs will be edited and ready before the birthday party, allowing you to incorporate them throughout the celebration.

Sometimes the sweetest moments happen in between the things we planned.
On the Big Day
Take lots of photos—but don’t feel like you have to document every single second.
You’ll already have beautiful professional portraits from your cake smash session.
Now your job is simply to be present.
Hold your baby a little longer.
Watch grandparents laugh with them.
Listen to the conversations around the room.
Take a few quiet moments to appreciate everything this first year has brought.

Believe it or not, it’s completely normal.
Some babies dive right in, while others cautiously poke at the frosting—or prefer eating strawberries instead! That’s one of the reasons we always begin with classic milestone portraits first. Should grandparents or siblings be included in a cake smash session?
Absolutely.
A baby’s first birthday is a celebration for the whole family. Including parents, siblings, and even grandparents for a few portraits creates meaningful images that become treasured heirlooms for years to come.
I actually really love it when parents and/or older siblings sit in with baby for the cake smash, it’s especially helpful and celebratory and cute when babies don’t quite know what cake is or how to enjoy it! The photos are usually adorable!
What should my baby wear for a cake smash session?
Timeless photographs never go out of style.

If you would like them to wear something special of their own — classic rompers, linen bloomers, heirloom dresses, smocked outfits, knit sets, or simple neutral clothing always photograph beautifully. I generally recommend avoiding large logos or busy patterns so the focus stays where it belongs—on your little one.
