What are Cake Smash Portraits?
Cake Smash Portraits are a joyful, whimsical way to celebrate your child’s birthday with a professionally styled portrait experience designed entirely around your preferences for theme and/or color palette. At Holy City Babies, each cake smash session is custom designed with curated themes, beautiful color palettes, balloon garlands, specialty props, and a petite deconstructed smash cake to create a one-of-a-kind celebration that feels elevated, playful, and timeless all at once. These sessions typically include a mix of classic milestone portraits before the cake is introduced, followed by all of the adorable, messy fun that unfolds as your little one digs into their birthday cake!
Note: Cake Smash Sessions aren’t just for 1 year olds! I have found over the years that two years olds really put on a show AND milestone / cupcake sessions for older children and adults are also really cool ways to document milestones!

Each Baby Milestone Session & Charleston Cake Smash Photography Celebration is custom designed for you based on your preferences for theme and/or color palette, our shared vision, and your child’s personality! Whether you love soft, timeless neutrals, whimsical florals, modern editorial styling, vintage-inspired details, or something bright and playful, your set is thoughtfully created specifically for your child!
After booking, we’ll schedule a Pre-Session Planning & Design Consultation where we’ll discuss:
- Preferences around Color Palette
- Themes and/or Design Inspiration
- Styling Preferences
- Wardrobe
- Props and textures
- Balloon colors and design direction
- Overall aesthetic and mood
