Milestone Portraits Before the Cake
One of my favorite parts about Charleston First Birthday Photos happens before the cake ever makes an appearance.
We begin with classic milestone portraits that focus entirely on your baby. The set for Milestone Portraits are simple, usually white with minimal props to put the focus entirely on your baby. These portraits highlight all the little details about them at this age that you’ll want to remember years from now—their bright eyes, tiny teeth, chunky baby hands, arms & legs, and those irresistible expressions that make them uniquely them.
These portraits often become treasured wall art pieces because they’re timeless and don’t feel tied to a specific birthday theme.

Every Baby Reacts Differently (And That’s the Fun Part!)
One of the most entertaining parts of a cake smash session is seeing how each baby responds.
Some babies dive right in and enthusiastically destroy the cake within seconds. Others approach cautiously, poking at the frosting with a single finger before deciding whether they’re interested.
Some babies prefer the balloons. Some become fascinated by the cake stand. Some would rather sit and smile at mom and dad than touch the cake at all.
And all of it is perfectly okay!
The goal isn’t to force a reaction—it’s to document your child’s authentic personality and create images that tell the story of who they were at this age.

When Should You Schedule Your Baby’s First Birthday Photos?
Most families schedule their session when their baby is between 11 and 12 months old.
Photographing your baby before their actual birthday allows plenty of time for viewing your images, selecting artwork, and displaying portraits at birthday celebrations if desired.
Because custom cake smash sessions require planning and design time, I recommend reaching out several weeks in advance whenever possible!
I also love that moment when every baby crawls away so as to say: I’m Done! 😂
