If you’re planning a Charleston babymoon, you’re in the right place! With its award-winning restaurants, luxury hotels, historic charm, beautiful beaches, world-class spas, and slower pace of life, Charleston, South Carolina has become one of the most sought-after babymoon destinations on the East Coast because Charleston is truly the perfect place to celebrate this season! And, you’re in luck because we’ve curated The Ultimate Charleston Babymoon Planning Guide.
Pregnancy is filled with unforgettable milestones—seeing that positive pregnancy test, hearing your baby’s heartbeat for the first time, and feeling those tiny kicks that suddenly make everything feel real. Before your little one arrives, many expecting parents choose to celebrate the final chapter as a party of two with a babymoon: a chance to step away from the demands of everyday life, reconnect with one another, and savor the anticipation of becoming a family.
As a Charleston maternity photographer and newborn photographer (Holy City Babies) with more than 17 years of professional experience photographing growing families, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside hundreds of parents during this extraordinary season. Time and again, I hear the same thing: couples never regret taking that last special trip together before welcoming their baby!
Whether you’re looking for the best luxury hotels in Charleston for a babymoon, relaxing prenatal spa treatments, reeeeaaal foodie dining, romantic experiences, or the perfect time to schedule your maternity photos while you’re here, The Ultimate Charleston Babymoon Planning Guide covers everything you need to plan an unforgettable getaway before your newest adventure begins.

When Is the Best Time to Take a Babymoon?
For most healthy pregnancies, the second trimester—generally between 20 and 30 weeks—is considered the ideal time to travel.
By this point, many expecting mothers have moved past the fatigue and nausea that can accompany the first trimester, while still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy walking, exploring, and traveling with their partner! Every pregnancy is different, so it’s always important to discuss your travel plans with your obstetric provider before booking a trip.

How Long Should a Babymoon Be?
You don’t need an elaborate two-week vacation to create meaningful memories together! In fact, many couples find that three or four days is the perfect length for a fun, restorative babymoon. A long weekend gives you plenty of time to unwind without feeling rushed or exhausted by travel. If you’re based in Charleston and want a change of scenery, you’re fortunate to have incredible mountain towns, charming Southern cities, luxury resorts, and beautiful beaches all within a few hours’ drive! Check out my Blog Post: The 10 Best Babymoon Destinations from Charleston (all within 3-4hrs)

What Should I Pack for a Charleston Babymoon?
Packing for a Charleston babymoon is a little different than packing for most destinations. The Lowcountry is known for its warm, humid climate nearly year-round, charming cobblestone streets, waterfront parks, and beautiful beaches—all of which are best enjoyed when you’re comfortable.
The key is to pack light, breathable clothing that will keep you cool while still feeling put together for romantic dinners, leisurely strolls through the Historic District, and sunset walks along the beach.
Comfortable Walking Shoes
Charleston is a city best explored on foot. From Rainbow Row and The Battery to King Street and the historic French Quarter, you’ll likely spend hours wandering charming streets. Pack supportive sandals or comfortable sneakers, as cobblestone sidewalks can be uneven—especially during pregnancy.
Breathable Maternity Clothing
Charleston’s humidity can make temperatures feel warmer than expected, particularly from late spring through early fall. Lightweight maternity dresses, linen pieces, soft cotton fabrics, and comfortable maternity shorts will help you stay cool while sightseeing. If you’re visiting November – March, pack layers and a light jacket! It can be warm in the sunshine during the day and then cooler when the sun goes down!
A Light Sweater or Wrap
Even in the warmer months, restaurants, hotels, and spas often keep their air conditioning quite cool. A lightweight cardigan, wrap, or linen button-down is perfect for staying comfortable indoors.
Swimsuit & Cover-Up
Whether you’re relaxing by your resort pool or spending the afternoon at Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, or Kiawah Island, don’t forget a supportive maternity swimsuit and an easy cover-up for walks along the shore.
Sun Protection
The South Carolina sun is strong, even during the cooler months. Pack a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, SPF lip balm, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated while exploring Charleston.
Pregnancy Essentials
Bring any medications or prenatal vitamins you take daily, along with compression socks if you’re traveling by plane or anticipate spending long days on your feet. Many moms also appreciate having electrolyte packets, healthy snacks, and a portable fan for especially warm afternoons.
A Dress for Date Night
Charleston is one of the South’s premier dining destinations, making your babymoon the perfect excuse to enjoy delicious, unforgettable dinners together! Pack one or two comfortable dresses that make you feel beautiful for evenings spent enjoying waterfront restaurants, rooftop cocktails (mocktails for mom!), or candlelit dinners in Charleston’s historic district!
Don’t Forget Your Camera… or Book a Maternity Session
One thing many couples overlook is documenting this extraordinary season of life. Your body is doing something entirely miraculous—growing, nurturing, and sustaining a brand-new human being! This fleeting chapter of womanhood passes more quickly than it feels in the moment, and because none of us can ever know what the future holds, there is something profoundly meaningful about choosing to preserve it with intention. A babymoon offers the perfect opportunity to create beautiful, artful portraits that honor not only the life you’re bringing into the world, but the remarkable woman bringing that life into it.
If you’re visiting Charleston between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant, consider scheduling a professional Charleston Maternity Photography Session during your stay! The city’s historic architecture, moss-draped ancient live oak trees, colorful streets, and gorgeous beaches provide some of the most beautiful maternity portrait locations in the country—and you’ll return home with more than memories. You’ll have timeless, tangible artwork to celebrate the beginning of your family’s story.
Fun Fact: My Studio offers an Extensive Collection of Maternity Gowns, Robes, Body Suits, Tossing Fabrics and other Unique Maternity Wardrobe pieces for our Clients to wear for their Maternity Portraits! We also offer Professional Hair & Makeup Service for you ahead of your Portrait Session which is perfect because you’ll already be made up for a spicy Date Night after your Portraits!

What Should We Do on Our Charleston Babymoon?
One of the biggest misconceptions about planning a Charleston babymoon is that you need a packed itinerary. In reality, the best babymoons leave plenty of room to slow down, reconnect, and simply enjoy being together before your little one arrives.
Charleston naturally lends itself to a slower pace. Spend your days wandering beneath centuries-old live oaks draped in Spanish moss, lingering over long brunches, browsing locally owned boutiques along King Street, or watching sailboats drift across Charleston Harbor. The goal isn’t to see everything—it’s to savor this extraordinary season before your lives change in the most beautiful way.
Some of our favorite Charleston babymoon activities include:
- Watching the sunrise over Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, or Sullivan’s Island followed by a delicious Brunch (see our favorite brunch spots below!)
- Booking a prenatal massage or couples spa day at one of Charleston’s luxury spas (see our top 3 Spas for prenatal pampering below!)
- Strolling through the Historic District, The Battery, Rainbow Row, and the French Quarter
- Spending an afternoon shopping along King Street’s boutiques and galleries (see recommendations for super cute baby boutiques below!)
- Walking through the beautiful gardens at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens or Middleton Place
- Enjoying a leisurely waterfront lunch overlooking Charleston Harbor or Shem Creek (see our recommendations below!)
- Relaxing by the pool at your hotel or on the beach with a good book
- Taking a sunset stroll along the beach or Waterfront Park
- Indulging in Charleston’s incredible dining scene with an unhurried date night (see our super foodie recommendations below!)
- Scheduling a professional maternity portrait session to preserve this remarkable chapter Get in Touch Here
- Sleeping late, ordering room service, and embracing the luxury of doing absolutely nothing
Above all, remember that your babymoon isn’t about checking landmarks off a list. It’s about pressing pause. Your body is accomplishing something truly extraordinary, and before the sleepless nights, diaper changes, and beautiful chaos of new parenthood begin, this is your opportunity to celebrate one another, soak in the anticipation, and create memories you’ll treasure long after your baby arrives!

Brunch in Charleston
If you’re planning a Charleston babymoon, these are the brunch spots I recommend most often. I’ve prioritized food quality, atmosphere, and the overall experience—places where you can linger over a leisurely meal together! Let’s start with Brunch if you’re catching the Sunrise on Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s or Folly Beach!
Isle of Palms
1. Acme Lowcountry Kitchen (my top pick!)
Acme Lowcountry Kitchen is a Charleston institution and arguably the best brunch on Isle of Palms. Their shrimp & grits, crab cake Benedict, and Lowcountry breakfast favorites are consistently excellent. Arrive early—it’s popular with both locals and visitors.

The Obstinate Daughter is one of the best restaurants in the entire Charleston area—not just Sullivan’s Island. It’s frequently recommended by national food publications.

3. The Co-op
No visit to Sullivan’s Island is complete without stopping by The Co-Op. This beloved island café is famous for its oversized gourmet breakfast sandwiches, fresh pastries, locally roasted coffee, and the iconic Frosé. It’s the perfect spot to grab a relaxed breakfast before heading to the beach or exploring the charming streets of Sullivan’s Island.
Folly Beach

Their nourishing grain bowls, avocado toast, smoothies, and fresh juices provide a refreshing alternative while still delivering one of downtown Charleston’s most stylish brunch experiences.

The Best Prenatal Spas in Charleston
No babymoon is complete without a little pampering. As your body works around the clock growing your little one, taking time to slow down and care for yourself isn’t just a luxury—it’s one of the best gifts you can give yourself during pregnancy. Charleston is home to several exceptional spas offering prenatal treatments designed specifically for expectant mothers, helping to ease sore muscles, reduce swelling, improve sleep, and leave you feeling refreshed before your baby’s arrival.
Here are three of our favorite spots for prenatal pampering in downtown Charleston:
1. The Dewberry Spa (my top pick!)
Tucked inside Charleston’s iconic Dewberry Hotel, The Dewberry Spa offers one of the city’s most luxurious prenatal experiences. Their tranquil, beautifully designed spa specializes in customized prenatal massage using pregnancy-safe techniques, making it the perfect escape after a morning exploring downtown. If you’re celebrating a babymoon, this is hard to beat for an elevated, indulgent experience.

A longtime Charleston favorite, Earthling Day Spa combines a peaceful atmosphere with expertly trained therapists who offer specialized prenatal massage using pregnancy support cushions for maximum comfort. Conveniently located in the Historic District, it’s an excellent option if you’re staying downtown and want a restorative break between sightseeing, shopping, and enjoying Charleston’s incredible restaurants.
Whether you choose a relaxing prenatal massage, a rejuvenating facial, or simply spend an afternoon unwinding together, a spa day is one of the most memorable ways to celebrate your babymoon. After all, caring for yourself is also caring for the little life you’re growing—and that’s always time well spent.

Charleston’s Best Baby Boutiques
One of the sweetest parts of a babymoon is dreaming about the little life you’re preparing to welcome. Whether you’re searching for the perfect “coming home” outfit, beginning your baby registry, or simply enjoying browsing tiny clothes together, Charleston is home to several beautiful baby boutiques that make the experience feel extra special.
Here are three of our favorite places to shop for your little one while you’re in Charleston:
1. Under the Almond Trees
Located in the heart of King Street, Under the Almond Trees is a must-visit for expecting parents. This beautifully curated boutique offers everything from luxury strollers and car seats to premium baby clothing, nursery essentials, toys, keepsake gifts, and maternity items. Their knowledgeable staff also provides baby registry assistance and personalized shopping, making it one of Charleston’s premier destinations for new and expectant parents.
2. Kids on King (my top pick!)
A Charleston institution for classic Southern children’s clothing, Kids on King is the perfect place to find timeless baby outfits, heirloom-quality clothing, luxury baby gifts, and adorable “take me home” ensembles. Located on historic King Street, it’s an ideal stop while exploring downtown Charleston’s shopping district.

Just across the bridge in nearby Mount Pleasant (pro tip: you might stop by on your way to or from Isle of Palms or Sullivans Island!), Lowcountry Baby Boutique specializes in beautifully curated baby gifts, boutique clothing, monogrammed keepsakes, nursery décor, and personalized baby essentials. It’s a wonderful place to pick up something meaningful for your own little one—or the perfect baby shower gift if you’re shopping for someone else.
Even if you’ve already finished your registry, there’s something magical about wandering through a baby boutique together. Holding impossibly tiny outfits, imagining your baby’s nursery, and choosing a special keepsake are the kinds of simple moments that often become some of the most cherished memories from your babymoon.

for Erica’s Maternity Portrait Session — she chose a Hybrid Session (1/2 the session was shot in our Charleston Portrait Studio on Savannah Hwy – Holy City Babies to create elevated, editorial style Maternity Portraits and 1/2 the session was shot on-location on Folly Beach! This is perfect if you aren’t really sure which style you prefer & maybe you want a little bit of both!)
Lunch on the Water in Charleston
Charleston’s beautiful waterfront is one of the city’s greatest treasures, and there are few better ways to spend an afternoon than lingering over a leisurely lunch while watching sailboats drift through the harbor or dolphins play in the marshes of Shem Creek. Whether you’re craving fresh seafood, Lowcountry favorites, or simply a beautiful place to relax together, these waterfront restaurants are well worth adding to your babymoon itinerary!
1. Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar (my top pick!)
Located directly on Charleston Harbor, Fleet Landing is the only true waterfront restaurant in historic downtown Charleston. Set inside a beautifully restored former naval building, it’s known for fresh local seafood, shrimp and grits, she-crab soup (my fave!), and panoramic harbor views from both the dining room and outdoor patio. It’s an iconic Charleston lunch experience that’s perfect for a leisurely afternoon together.
2. Tavern & Table (Shem Creek)
For a slightly more elevated waterfront experience, Tavern & Table offers chef-driven Lowcountry cuisine overlooking picturesque Shem Creek. With expansive outdoor seating, passing shrimp boats, frequent dolphin sightings, and an outstanding menu of fresh seafood, salads, sandwiches, and craft cocktails (or mocktails for mom!), it’s one of the most beautiful lunch spots in the Charleston area.
3. Vickery’s Bar & Grill (Shem Creek)
A longtime Shem Creek favorite, Vickery’s offers a relaxed waterfront atmosphere with sweeping marsh views and plenty of outdoor seating. The menu features fresh seafood, fish tacos, salads, sandwiches, and Southern classics, making it an easy choice for a casual lunch after exploring Mount Pleasant or strolling the Shem Creek Boardwalk. Keep an eye on the water—you may even spot dolphins swimming through the creek while you dine.
One of the greatest luxuries of a babymoon is simply having nowhere to rush off to. Order dessert, linger over another glass of sweet tea or fresh lemonade, watch the boats drift by, and soak in these quiet moments together. Before long, your days will be wonderfully full of diaper changes, bedtime routines, and tiny hands reaching for yours. This season is your chance to slow down and simply enjoy one another.

This intimate neighborhood restaurant offers an inventive seasonal menu highlighting Lowcountry ingredients, handmade pastas, and thoughtfully crafted shareable plates. The warm, candlelit atmosphere and exceptional wine program make it an ideal destination for a romantic evening together.

Maternity & Newborn Portraits
If you’re planning a babymoon, you’re also approaching the ideal time for maternity portraits! I typically recommend scheduling your Maternity Portrait Session between 28 and 34 weeks, when your baby bump is beautifully round and you’re still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy the experience!

Many expecting parents are surprised to learn that the best time to reserve a newborn photography session is during pregnancy, not after your baby is born!
At Holy City Babies, most of our families book their baby’s Newborn Portraits during the second trimester to ensure availability around their due date (I can only take on 5 newborns each month in addition to the other types of portrait sessions I shoot at the studio each month!) We’ll use your Due Date as a placeholder during booking. Once your little one arrives, all you’ll need to do is let me know, and we’ll schedule your newborn session during those first two weeks after birth, usually between days 12-15.
